As an avid open water swimmer, I’ve had the pleasure of swimming at Sand Harbor Beach multiple times, and it has quickly become one of my favorite spots for training. If you’re planning a rogue open water swim with friends, I highly recommend starting early in the morning. Arriving around 7:00 AM not only helps you secure a good parking spot but also ensures you’ll experience the calmest waters and minimal wind, making your swim safer and more enjoyable.
The water clarity at Sand Harbor is truly exceptional, often allowing you to see up to 70 feet below. The designated swim areas, marked by buoys, keep boat traffic at bay and create a safe environment for swimmers. However, for those of us who like to venture beyond these buoys, safety should always be a priority. I always swim with a buddy and wear a brightly colored swim cap and use a swim buoy for visibility. It’s also a good idea to inform someone on shore about your swim plans and expected duration.
With the stunning views of granite boulders and the pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, every swim at Sand Harbor feels like an adventure. Whether you’re training for an event or just enjoying a leisurely swim with friends, this beach offers an unbeatable combination of beauty and excellent swimming conditions.
